I'm posting for 60 days straight, leading up to my early December birthday, and I'm making the time to write on behalf of slain UCC Professor and aspiring novelist, Larry Levine.
The three school shootings since last Thursday's massacre at Umpqua Community College in Oregon barely made a blip on my radar. According to the chilling mapview of school shootings from advocacy group Everytown's site, shootings occurred at:
- Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff
- University City High School, Missouri
- Texas Southern University, Houston
Friday morning's shooting in Flagstaff presented another teen fatality, Colin Brough. The shooter was an 18 year old freshman. My son's an 18 year old freshman just down the road in Tucson, and I can't imagine the shock, grief, and fury the Brough family is navigating. As well as the families of the wounded.
Some thoughts, in no particular order:
- I support the Second Amendment right for US citizens to bear arms. But I believe in common sense - there must be limits on the quantity of arms on can legally acquire - there's no need for an individual to have over a dozen guns as was the case in Oregon last week. Or Sandy Hook or Columbine or Aurora. Given the precision and accuracy of today's guns.
